Gail Reid of Gail Reid Mortgage Services

This year marks a major milestone for Gail Reid Mortgage Services (GRMS) – a full decade of helping people across the North-east find the right mortgage solutions.

To celebrate the journey so far, we sat down with director Gail Reid to reflect on the early days, proudest moments and what lies ahead for GRMS in the next 10 years.

What made you want to become a mortgage broker?

“I started out working in a High Street bank about 25 years ago. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do at that point. The bank manager suggested I sit my mortgage exams and that’s where it all began. From there, I moved to an independent mortgage brokerage and just kept learning and gaining experience. I eventually decided to build something of my own.”

What prompted the office move, and how has this changed the way you work?

“We were previously based in a small office out at Thainstone,  which served us well for years. However, moving to the High Street in Inverurie has been a game changer. We’re just more visible. It feels like we’re part of the local community now.”

What part of GRMS are you most proud of?

“Our team – without a doubt. I’m incredibly proud that we’ve built an amazing all-female team. They’re not only brilliant at what they do, but they also genuinely care about the people we help. The atmosphere in the office is supportive, collaborative and just really positive.”

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned running GRMS?

“There have been so many lessons I’ve learned along the way – some harder than others! I think the biggest lesson in running your own business is that you can’t do it all. It’s tempting, especially in the early days, to try to be everything but learning to delegate, trust your team and focus on where you add the most value is absolutely crucial.”

What’s the most challenging thing about being a mortgage broker?

“Everyone seems to get their offers accepted at the same time! The workload can be incredibly intense at times especially during busy market periods. The juggle is real! That’s where having good systems, strong teamwork and clear communication becomes essential.”

What advice would you give to someone buying their first home?

“Definitely reach out to a mortgage professional at the earliest opportunity. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the options. Having a mortgage broker in your corner who can explain things clearly, help you understand your budget and guide you through the process can make a huge difference.”

Looking ahead to the next 10 years, what are your hopes and plans for the future of Gail Reid Mortgage Services?

“I’d love to continue growing at a steady, sustainable pace – building on our reputation while staying true to our values: personal, honest advice that’s tailored to each client. It’s really about continuing to evolve while keeping our clients at the heart of everything we do.”
